Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Metal Supermarkets!

Four questions with Ed DeStefano, founder of Metal Supermarkets.

Why did you start your business?

I was looking for a change in my career having worked for large corporations for many years. In my experience, I could not easily acquire metal for my hobby/projects so it seemed to me that western Connecticut could benefit significantly from a super convenient and customer-focused metal supplier, so after finding the Metal Supermarkets franchise felt that it was a perfect fit.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Hot rolled structural steel, sheet, and plate but a close second and third are aluminum and stainless steel.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We partner with several local small businesses to support fabrication but would rather not disclose their names. We try very hard to form productive relationships and work with, rather than compete against other small local businesses.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

We only opened in June of this year so we are only just yet imagining our full potential.
