The Nature of Wine and Creativity: A Sensory Wine-Tasting Experience on September 17

As a capstone to Full STEAM Ahead: Learning and Making in the 21st Century, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and Ridgefield Library will co-host The Nature of Wine and Creativity: A Sensory Wine-Tasting Experience. Steven T. Dahlberg, Director of the International Centre for Creativity & Imagination in New Milford, CT and James Baker, Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at Hopkins Vineyard in Warren, CT will guide this mind-expanding wine-tasting experience at the Library in Ridgefield, CT, on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 5 to 7 pm.

Providing an original perspective on how to enjoy wine, the tasting will incorporate the principles of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art (+Design), and Math) to explore the intersection of creativity, wine, and the brain. Guests will gain a critical understanding of the highly interdisciplinary art of winemaking—blending horticulture, chemistry, biology, mechanics, the senses, artistry and more in both the vineyard and in the glass. "This event will help you think differently about wine, learning, creativity, and STEAM," says Steven T. Dahlberg, director of the International Centre for Creativity and Imagination and co-facilitator of The Nature of Wine and Creativity. "It will demonstrate the subjectivity of how we perceive and experience wine, challenge our notion of 'expertise' and raise questions about the brain's role in how we learn and perceive everything."

Through sampling four Connecticut wines from Hopkins Vineyard, participants will consider the science of taste and smell and the aesthetics of experiencing wine while discovering how master sommeliers learn to understand wine and what’s happening in the brain when we taste and smell wine. This applied example of STEAM is intended to spark curiosity and relay how the principles of STEAM can be incorporated into everyday life.

The Nature of Wine and Creativity is part of Full STEAM Ahead: Learning and Making in the 21st Century, a cross-disciplinary symposium and community engagement event.

Tickets to the wine-tasting are $45 per person; however this event is also included as part of the Full STEAM Ahead Full Symposium Package ($150) or the Full STEAM Ahead Saturday Sessions ONLY package ($145) and participants do not require an additional ticket.
