Danbury Public Library Short Story Book Club

Danbury Public Library Launches a Short Story Book Club on Saturday, May 26, 2018

Danbury Public Library is pleased to offer a new book club among its line-up of book groups. This newest group is, "more like a gathering of friends in a cozy living room," states Adult Librarian Jodi L. Weisz, MLIS. It is called the Short on Time Book Club in a nod to our modern lives.

In this book club, participants will be reading provocative short stories, the best of the best, authors who have won the Nobel Prize for Literature; the Pen Faulkner Award; the O. Henry Prize; also, well-known South American writers.

As Ms. Weisz enthusiastically tells it, "I wanted to bring a slice of The New Yorker to Danbury, CT."

Ms. Weisz read through dozens and dozens of editions of The New Yorker; through The Pushcart Prize's Best of the Small Presses; devoured Lorrie Moore's 100 Years of the Best Short Stories; Harper's; The Guardian and The Paris Review--all with an eye to finding short stories that would speak to Danburians.

"Danburians are eclectic, artistic, well-traveled and open-minded. Often, they are on the vanguard of discovering an author before he/she becomes widely-known. I have kept an eye out for stories that foster tantalizing discussions. Participants' suggestions will also be welcomed.”

Ms. Weisz continues, “Danbury has many budding and accomplished writers in town; we have folks who record original poetry for NPR, who lead open-mics. We have talented storytellers and history buffs. I have seen a burst of artistic and literary prowess that is putting Danbury on-the-map. We are becoming a literary hot spot.”

Residents can now wake-up Saturday mornings and have their literary hunger satisfied by going to the downtown Library. The Danbury Public Library offers art displays; discussion groups; a writers’ critique group; a romance writers’ group; a poetry group; special adult programming; citizenship classes; a popular 8-point mindfulness workshop and a meditation group on Saturdays throughout the year.

The Danbury Public Library is a great weekend destination.

Finally, Ms. Weisz hopes to offer coffee and some delicious bread from Danbury's Le Elephant Bakery to participants of the Short on Time Book Club. “I can’t wait to hear the ooohs and aaahs over the fresh bread along with the peals of laughter over the great short stories. I know there will be many intriguing insights.”

The Short on Time Book Club starts on Saturday, May 26th at 11 AM. It runs for 4-weeks. To register email Jodi Weisz at:jweisz@danburylibrary.org or call her at: (203) 797-4505 ext. 7728.
