From a middle school student’s idea to a community celebration
In March 2017, Alexis Main’s 12 year-old-daughter came to her with an English Language Arts (ELA) project she was doing for school. The basis of the project was to select and write about an issue that impacts society. Main’s daughter chose LGBTQ+ rights. But she didn’t stop there: she wanted to organize a parade for people in the northwestern Connecticut area to come and support people from all walks of life—and that’s when the Bethel LGBTQ+ Pride Parade was born!
With friends, Main’s daughter began organizing this parade in the town of Bethel for all to come, speak, and show support for others in the LGBTQ+community that need a place to feel welcome. Thanks to volunteers, local business, and community groups, a kind-hearted school project is now the first celebration of its kind in northwestern Connecticut.
