Greater Danbury Weather Alert: accumulating snowfall expected Wednesday into Thursday

NOAA has issued a weather alert for snow and bitterly cold temperatures this week.

A powerful low-pressure system will track well southeast of the region Thursday and into the Canadian Maritimes Thursday night. This will bring a period of accumulating snowfall and potentially strong winds, followed by potentially dangerous cold.

Potential Snowfall Hazards and Impacts:

  • There is a high probability of a light accumulating snowfall for most of the region late Wednesday night (January 3) into Thursday evening (January 4). Travel may become hazardous due to poor visibility and snow covered roads.

Additional Storm Hazards:

  • Winds: Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are likely along the coast Thursday afternoon into Thursday Night.
  • There is a low potential for gusts to 50 mph across Eastern LI and Southeastern CT late Thursday afternoon into Thursday Evening.
  • Blowing and drifting snow would be possible along the coast.
  • Marine:
  • Low water conditions are expected during low tide Today into Tonight resulting in hazardous navigation.
  • Gale conditions are likely on all the local waters Thursday into Friday, with Storm Force gusts possible on the eastern ocean waters Thursday afternoon into Evening.
  • Coastal Flooding: There is a low probability of minor coastal flooding with the Thursday morning high tide cycle.

Forecast Uncertainty: There is still model spread on how close to the coast that low pressure tracks on Thursday. Some convergence in model solution is anticipated in the 24 next hrs.

  • A track closer to the coast, would increase the chance for 6+ inches of snow across the region and the potential for 40 to 50 mph gusts along the coast.
  • A track farther offshore, would keep snowfall on the low end of the expected snowfall range and winds gusts mainly in the 30 to 35 mph range for the coast.

Bitter to Dangerous cold Friday into Saturday

  • A dangerously cold shot of arctic air is possible for Friday into Saturday.
  • Windchills of -15 to -25 degrees possible by early Saturday morning.
