Fall Sports Season Kicks Off at Wooster School!

The preseason practices are over; students have returned to the Wooster campus; the weather still feels summer-like, but the fall sports season is about to begin! Upper and Middle School students will begin competing in cross country, football, soccer, and volleyball!

Cross Country

The Wooster Cross Country team is coming off of both Boys and Girls Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) Championships. This year will be a rebuilding year for the Generals after graduating most of the scoring runners. This will give new runners a chance to really shine.

The Generals cross country competition starts on September 12 at Harvey School.

Boys Soccer

The Wooster Boys’ Varsity Soccer team will be tested this year with the graduation of many key seniors. The boys program has also brought in a new head coach Kevin Malta. He brings new ideas and tactics to the program. There are talented players ready to step up in each position, but they will have their work cut out for them.

In Goal, senior Jack Barsh and sophomore Will Russell will fight for the starting spot. Coach Kevin will be changing the style of play from last season and going to four across the back line that could include seniors Anthony Vines, Matt Eskenazi along with junior Ben Everett and freshman Reid Etzbach. Defensive mid could see a number of players, but the frontrunner looks to be senior Cooper Byrnes. Rounding off a talented midfield three will be seniors Alan Jos and Mark Toledo. On the wings many players will battle for the starting spots. Up top, we could see a combo of players with senior Jacob Smith looking to lead the line.

The goals for the year are to be successful in league play, above .500, and to finish the season with a winning record. Other crucial members of the varsity team will be Simon Felicione, Parker Etzbach, Joey Everett, Brooks Byrnes, and Brandon Caraballo.

The Generals open the season on September 5 on the road versus King School.

Girls Soccer

The Wooster Girls' Varsity Soccer team had a great two weeks of preseason preparing for the upcoming season. The team has a new head coach Cristiano Pereira who is looking to build a positive team chemistry as well build a winning tradition at Wooster.

This season the team will be led by three seniors, Alix Wadehra, Bailey Storrier, and Nicole Caraballo. The team also has three juniors that will have to step up this this season, Alicia Nicoletti, Megan Bourgeault, and Georgie O'Connell. There are a handful of talented sophomores Darby Drahzal, Alice Purkiss, Frances Ryan, Charlotte Kaczmarek, Savanna Sikorski, and Katie Washer who will gain some much needed experience this season. The team is excited to have five new freshmen joining the roster Ella Cohn, Abby Delattre, Jordan Dupree, Sophia Rodriguez, and Lillie Shipman.

The Generals open the season on the road on September 8 at Watkinson School.

Girls Volleyball

The Wooster Girls' Volleyball team is looking forward to a great season on the court. The team will be young and might have some early season growing pains but hopefully will put everything together by the end of the season.

The team is led by two returning seniors who anchor the offense and defense. Captain Mimi Pelton-McCormick is playing her 4th year of Varsity and does everything great including setting, hitting, and serving. The team defensive captain is returning libero Karelin Dominguez who provides great back row play and steady leadership. Joining Mimi and Karelin as returning players are sophomore, Emma Shorten as another great all-around player, and junior Middle, Michaela Zahner. The team is very excited to be joined by junior D/S Melanie Vazquez, sophomore hitters Ali Lopes and Jillian Schnaudigal, and senior hitter Jamie Eason. A group of freshman led by Middle Deanna Jones, D/S Megan Heneghan, D/S Angelina Cerulli, outside Lulu Carone, and setter Evie Zahner are all looking to contribute to the team this season.

Despite being two time defending Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) Champions and qualifying for the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Tournament in 2017, the team has a very challenging season ahead of them facing a strong conference schedule and five non-conference matches versus some of the best New England teams. However, the team has worked very hard during pre-season and are up to the challenge. Plus they have a lot of fun playing and being Generals!

The Generals open the season on September 5 at home versus Hamden Hall Day School.

Football

Wooster School is dedicated to providing a wide array of athletic opportunities on both the varsity and junior varsity levels which will enhance and enrich the educational experience of our students, as well as provide recreational and fitness activities for the entire community.

In an effort to further athletic opportunities for our student athletes, Wooster School has partnered with Harvey School, to provide Wooster students the opportunity to play varsity football.

Led by Harvey Coach Kyle Delaney, the football team opens the season on September 8 against Hopkins School.
