Danbury resident Evelyn Ellis, 92, has died

Evelyn (Hajjar) Ellis, 92, of Danbury, wife of the late Edward R. Ellis, died on Saturday morning, November 3, 2018 at her home.

Mrs. Ellis was born in Danbury, February 13, 1926, the daughter of Abdelnoor and Philomena (Caram) Hajjar. She attended Danbury schools.

A retired office manager of Danbury Orthopedic Associates, Mrs. Ellis was first associated with Drs. William Sinton and Robert Fornshell in their orthopedic practice and continued as the medical practice expanded and became Danbury Orthopedic Associates. She retired in 1991 after 30 years.

Active in the Arabic community of Danbury, Mrs. Ellis in early years was involved in the former Young Women’s Syrian Lebanese Society (YWSLS) and the Lebanon American Club Auxiliary. Mrs. Ellis was honored by the Lebanon American Club and Auxiliary and recognized for her contributions and was a recipient of a “Person of the Year Award” in 2017.

A committed member of St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Parish of Danbury, Mrs. Ellis was a member of the Ladies Guild, a past member and president of the Parish Council, Scholarship Committee and former chairperson of Club 25. She also co-chaired the annual Holiday Bazaar, St. Patrick’s Day Card Party and Raffle, Annual Parish Picnic and Parish Anniversary celebrations.

Mrs. Ellis enjoyed crocheting, knitting and especially cooking.

A tenacious person, she enjoyed celebrating life and sharing her joy with her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Diane R. Bruno of Danbury; a son, Scott E. Ellis and his wife Randy of Weston, CT; a brother, Eli Hajjar and his wife Joann of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren, Meghan Underwood and her husband Ryan, Michael C. Bruno, Robert Ellis, Zachary Ellis, Jacquelyn Ellis and Madalyn Ellis; a great granddaughter, Abigail Rose Underwood and by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ellis was predeceased by three brothers, Abdelnoor “JR” Hajjar Jr., Abraham Hajjar and Albert Hajjar.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, 17 Granville Ave., Danbury with Father Naji Kiwan officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Ave., Danbury on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Contributions in Mrs. Ellis’ memory may be made to St. Anthony Maronite Church Building Fund or St. Anthony Maronite Church Scholarship Fund.
