Memorial Service in Danbury for Evelyn Wisner, WWII Navy Flight Nurse

Evelyn A. Wisner née Evelyn A. Schretenthaler,  98, of Ridgefield, passed away peacefully at Glen Hill Center in Danbury on December 11 with her daughter, Kim Sage, and friend, Kerry Anne Ducey, by her side.

Born in Jamestown ND on November 10, 1920, Mrs. Wisner attended Zap High School and Trinity Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Wisner was a United States Navy lieutenant junior grade and was one of 12 World War II nurses who helped evacuate wounded U.S. soldiers from Iwo Jima. She went on to serve during the battle of Okinawa before departing the Navy in 1946. Following her time in service, Mrs. Wisner worked at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn MI where she was a  Neonatal Special Care RN.

In 2012, Mrs. Wisner was named a "local hero" by the American Red Cross and presented the Military Award from Ridgefield First Selectman, Rudy Marconi and the American Red Cross.

Mrs. Wisner is survived by her loving daughter Kim Sage and son in law David Sage of Ridgefield and many adoring cats. She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin John Wisner, DDS, as well as her brothers, all Navy veterans, George, Lester, and Joe  Schretenthaler.

The family would like to thank the fine staff at Glen Hill Center who cared for Mrs. Wisner and the wonderful Hospice by RVNA team.

As per her wishes, Mrs. Wisner’s body was donated to Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

Ms. Wisner will be remembered at a Memorial Service on Saturday, December 22 beginning at 10:00 am at St. Peter Church, 104 Main Street in Danbury, CT.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to AID Cat Shelter in Wilton CT, Animals In Distress PO Box 312 Wilton, CT 06897 and to Hospice by RVNA,  27 Governor Street, Ridgefield CT 06877.
