Danbury's Community Institute for Communities hosts graffiti artist on August 10

DANBURY —The Connecticut Institute for Communities (CFIC) will honor National Health Center Week and celebrate the opening of an 8,000-foot headquarters addition with an art show.

Dedan Davenport, an artist and licensed social worker, will display his work, which uses graffiti to demonstrate “the source of the present moment, showing how we arrived at this moment, regardless of what’s in the way.”

Although Davenport paints in many categories and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt University, graffiti has remained his core specialty. He said he finds it the most personally gratifying and a therapeutic form of self-expression. The therapeutic aspect, combined with his focus on mindfulness, led Davenport to align art with social work and obtain a Master of Social Work degree at Fordham University, a natural progression that paired well with his long-standing desire to help those in need.

The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut partnered with CIFC to stage the show, with a focus on the region’s emerging and under-represented artists.

The exhibit, titled “A Mindful Path Home,” will open AT 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, with an artist’s reception at the CIFC headquarters at 120 Main St. The opening will combine with a CIFC-hosted Community Day as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new addition on Aug. 11.
