Charles Ives, a Danbury native and renowned American composer, played a holiday concert on the pipe organ at the First United Methodist Church on July 4, 1892. He was all of 17 years old at the time but his work "Variations on America” went on to become a pipe organ classic and a part of American musical tradition.
On July 2, 2023, up-and-coming organist Zacchaeus Lock, also of Danbury, will perform this and the other organ works of Charles Ives, at the very same church, on the very same organ, to kick off the Independence Day week in Brewster. The program includes other works by American composers and choral performances of various works that informed Ives’s compositions.
The performance will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 83 Main St. Brewster, NY at 4pm. In addition to the organ concert, selections of American patriotic songs will be performed by the Putnam Chorale. Tickets are $15 at the door.
