Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT MERAKI Nails and Beauty!

Three questions with Karen Torres and Carolann Ruiz, owners of MERAKI Nails and Beauty!

Why did you start your business?

Karen and I (Carolann) started this business because we felt there was a need for nontoxic beauty services in Danbury. We also have careers and talents we wanted to share with our community. Karen is a makeup artist and nail technician. She has worked in the beauty industry for approximately 8 years. She's always had a passion for clean beauty and incorporating that into our nail salon was something we knew would be great for the community. I am a registered nurse and therefore having a healthcare professional focus on nail health, as well as infection control, was just a few strengths we could combine and pour into a business. This is how Meraki Nails and Beauty began, with a desire to use our strengths and provide them to our community. We love our careers and using our careers to enhance the wellbeing and happiness of our clients gives us deep fulfillment and empowerment.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business: I wish I could...

I wish I could open more nontoxic nail salons in Connecticut to increase the awareness of the benefits of nontoxic beauty and safer alternatives.
