Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.

You're IT Gina Sierra Photography!

Three questions with Gina Sierra.

Why did you start your business?

I come from a long line of folks who have valued photography. When I was a little girl, one of my favorite things was listening to my mom tell our family’s stories, while we flipped through our “family heritage” photo album, which contains some photographs as old as photography itself. I used to look at these images of my ancestors, imagining what it would be like to know them at that time, their whole future ahead of them. The significant moments they chose to preserve on film became the images that told the story of our family and I fell in love with the way photography is able to share that story with every generation to follow. I truly feel that it’s my calling to document family stories and preserve them as a photographic legacy for my clients to pass down to their children and grandchildren.

What is your best selling product/service?

My best-selling package is The First Year Collection. The first year of a child’s life is so exciting, and they are always reaching new milestones. So, I created a portrait collection that includes four photography sessions covering the most significant milestones: maternity, newborn, six months and first birthday. It’s so incredible to follow a family during this time - not only to see the baby’s progress but also to see how the family grows closer together. At the end of the experience, the family receives an heirloom quality photo album that tells the story of their baby’s beginnings. As I mentioned, I have a very strong attachment to family heirloom albums. It gives me goosebumps to imagine the many generations that will flip through this album in the future. One day that baby will be grown and have children of their own - imagine how incredible it will be for their children and grandchildren to see these photos!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I believe in supporting local businesses as much as possible, both in my work and personal life! The cakes I order for my First Birthday Cake Smash sessions come from baker Erin Daily (New Fairfield), and I always refer my clients to Glamour By Steph (Newtown) to get their hair and makeup done. For my graphic design needs, I turn to Marni Cutler Design (Newtown), and I’ve ordered custom made wooden backdrops from Sam Falco Design, (Brewster, NY). For outdoor portrait sessions, I love going to Tarrywile Park (Danbury), or taking my clients to go apple picking at Blue Jay Orchards (Bethel)! Our community is rich with small businesses offering unique and personal experiences that you can’t find anywhere else. I’m so grateful to work with such amazing people, and I’m so happy to call Danbury my home!
