Why Small Businesses Matter Reimagined

Small businesses matter - now more than ever. They are answering the call with innovation and determination like never before.

We hope you join us in supporting them by sharing their story far and wide and shopping local! We are thankful to Fairfield County Bank for their continued support and making this series possible.

Four questions with Penny Hartz, founder of Butternut Alpacas.

What do you want the community to know? Are there ways for the community to help you and other local businesses to prosper?

Butternut Alpacas is proud to offer wonderful, high-quality alpaca products that are luxuriously soft and warm, kind to the earth, all-natural, and hypo-allergenic. Shop from a wide assortment of socks, mittens, capes, hats, scarves, throws, and teddy bears. Apparel made with alpaca is great for outdoor wear as it is 5X warmer than wool, soft like cashmere, and wicks away moisture. Alpaca products make great gifts - everyone loves to wear alpaca! I started this business about 10 years ago after becoming very interested in alpacas and learning about all the qualities that their fiber can offer. It truly is supreme and is known as the fiber of the gods. I decided to start a small retail business so I could showcase how wonderful alpaca fiber is and how great it is to wear, especially outdoors.

Are you offering any new products, or ways for customers to purchase your products or services that are popular during this crisis?

Because of COVID, we are not doing live shows this year, but we do have a website where you can shop! If you are local, I can deliver your products to you or meet you somewhere that’s convenient to pick up.

Are there certain individuals or organizations that supported you and your business through this trying time?

With virtually (no pun intended) all live shows and craft fairs being canceled, a few organizations like St. Marguerite’s in Brookfield are offering virtual (online) fairs. We appreciate that they are concerned about our small business and are offering the opportunity to sell this way.

Please share the ways your business is adapting to keep your customers and employees safe in addition to the standard guidelines.

I am holding off selling in person at fairs this year. I want to keep my products as safe as possible and feel by selling online, I am minimizing the risk as I am the only one handling these products until they get to you.

Please feel free to visit the Butternut Alpacas website here, and also make sure to check out their Facebook page as well!
