Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Boylan Designs!

Four questions with Shaun Boylan, Craftsman/President of Boylan Designs.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business to give area residents the opportunity to spruce up their homes at a real price. I have almost 20 years of fine woodworking experience. I charge far less than my competitors but give a much higher quality product at the same time.

What is your best selling product/service?

Currently, built-in cabinets with hutches or floating shelves seem to be the biggest draw. Refinishing existing cabinets is a close second. I hope to become large enough to be a full kitchen and bath expert and add remodeling services to my list of options.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Unfortunately, many of the small businesses that would support my trade have been forced to close. Hardware stores and small mom and pops places have been run out by big box stores. Currently, I use Rings End in Bethel and New Milford for lumber and cabinet hardware. I use Sherwin Williams for paint. When needed, I also use Home Depot or Lowes.
