Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT, Hangry Hare!

Four questions with Krutarth Mehta, founder of Hangry Hare.

Why did you start your business?

One of my main goals in life was to create my own proper small business called “Hangry Hare” but due to the severity of Covid19, I was unable to open my small business at that time. Once I got back from Block Island, RI in October, I realized this is the perfect time to start. I got my logo finalized and started to self-promote myself on social media. My goal was to show others my skills in the kitchen and the variety of different dishes I can make and serve to the locals.

What is your best-selling product/service?

My best-selling service so far has been my in-home private chef dinners. With my in-home dinners, I offer a free consultation to my client(s). We discuss what dishes they would like to have and once that is finalized. I come over to their home and cook the dish/dishes they decided to have for that day and/or night. I believe everyone has the right to treat themselves to a night where they don’t have to worry about cooking for themselves. So that is where I come in!

Not only do I provide excellent in-home private chef dinners, but I also offer in-home cooking classes, meal kit programs, and catering. In the next two weeks, my goal is to start my ramen to-go kits and ramen classes.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

When it comes to local businesses, I have just two who help support my business.

1. Bagel Delight in Newtown, CT: The owner is extremely generous, and in my honest opinion she has the best bagel sandwiches! She allowed me to put up fliers of my small business in her store and offered to help me as much as I needed to promote my business.

2. Southbury Printing Centre, CT: They have helped me print my labels for all of my sauces, which include my Korean BBQ, Jerk Sauce, Tomato Basil, etc. they have also helped me print labels for my kimchi.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I have re-imagined my business in a variety of different ways. At first, I wanted my small business to just focus on ramen, ramen to-go containers, kits, etc. But now, I have included my homemade sauces, which did sell extremely well.

My goal for the next upcoming weeks is to create ways to serve my food that isn’t bland, but fun and different. I want to focus on making dinner meal kits that are family-friendly, so everyone can enjoy them.

Now, that I have taken the time to re-imagine my business, I truly feel that I have a better understanding of how I can make my small business successful, and not only that but create memories, not just for me but for my clients as well. I want to create the best experience possible for all my clients and I want to be able to offer as many options as possible when it comes to my small business “Hangry Hare”.
