Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Mad Hatter Tattoo!

Three questions with Ethan Allen Parkhurst, founder of Mad Hatter Tattoo.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I wanted to make a living doing what I have done for over 25 years while being my own boss and contributing a fun attraction to our town.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Yes! We use Hat City Paper, Stop & Shop, Amigos Deli, and Sugar Hollow Tunes & Taproom.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

You could say so. I went with the Mad Hatter theme because of Danbury‘s hat-making industry history and connection to the story. I thought not only was it perfect for the tattoo scene, but it also gave attention to the fact that Danbury had a part in the story. Many people are intrigued to find out Danbury's connection to the Mad Hatter character when they learn that in some parts of the world, mercury poisoning is referred to as the “Danbury shakes”!
