Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT K. Fortuna Realty of Connecticut!

Three questions with Meagan Warnock, a realtor at K. Fortuna Realty, Inc of Connecticut.

Why did you start your business?

I thoroughly enjoy being a local realtor and helping families' dreams of homeownership become a reality. I also take great pride in mentoring newer realtors to be the knowledgeable, professional, and personable realtors our brokerage expects. Before becoming a realtor, I was a social worker serving Westchester County and New York City for ten years. After staying home to raise my children, I wanted to continue to help others when I returned to the workforce.

I decided to dip my toe in real estate and fell madly in love with it the first time I handed keys to my first-time home buyer clients. My decade of service in my previous career has gifted me the tools to help clients navigate the home buying and selling process on a personal level.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Service is best when it is personalized; that is what I provide to my clients. I limit the number of clients I work with at a time to ensure each one receives the individualized attention they deserve. Whether they are buying, selling, or looking for an investment property, my clients know I will hold their hand every step of the way.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I strongly support our community and have several businesses I depend on in different stages of my work. Uncle Matt's Bakery in Sandy Hook is the perfect treat to bring to home inspections. Rebecca Hogenauer at Preferred Insurance Services is a Newtown insurance broker who has helped multiple clients save on their homeowner's insurance policies. Each of my clients Rebecca can help, she donates to the Faith Food Pantry.

Sarah DeVellis Adams, a local Newtown photographer, photographs each of my listings. Strength & Grace Boutique has a beautiful selection of gifts that are perfect for closing gifts, including their charcuterie boards engraved with Sandy Hook and Newtown on them. Lastly, Lauren Morehouse, the owner of Castle Meadow Designs, creates all of my one-of-a-kind personalized closing gifts.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

When I first started as a realtor, I was told to live by the real estate motto, ABC, Always Be Closing. I started my real estate career at a large national company and I appreciate the opportunity I was given and the training I received. When I transferred to a small privately owned brokerage, I became the type of realtor I wanted to be. I now focus on my clients, providing support to them every step of the journey, and focus on building roots within my community. Since transferring brokerages and finding my way, with the support of my broker and teammates, I have flourished in my career.

Meagan would like to nominate Red Oak Tree Service in Sandy Hook to be featured next - "Last Fall, I had a massive tree split and half of it fell. The remaining part of the tree was weak and threatened a neighbor's home if it fell. I contacted multiple tree companies and Red Oak came out immediately. They agreed the risk to the neighbor's home was too great and had their crew at our home the following morning to remove the tree. They identified several of our trees were sick and removed each one that day. I appreciate their fast action to keep my family and the families surrounding us safe."
