Troopers Seize Firearms during Motor Vehicle Stop on I-84 in Danbury

Danbury, CT (March 19, 2018): On March 18, 2018 at approximately 12:07 p.m., troopers from Troop A-Southbury were conducting speed enforcement on I-84 westbound in the area of exit 2 in Danbury when they observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Troopers clocked the vehicle’s speed at 81 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Troopers stopped the vehicle, a Ford Explorer, I-84 westbound near exit 2. While speaking with the operator, the trooper detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A passenger stated that he had smoked marijuana and that he had "blunts in the car.”

Through the course of the investigation troopers, Danbury police officers and state police K9 Favor, searched the vehicle. They seized blunts, a small bag of marijuana and three firearms from inside the vehicle. One of the firearms was found to have had the serial number scratched off.

Two of the passengers were taken into custody and transported to Troop A. The vehicle operator was issued an infraction for the speeding violation and released.

Robert Ruiz (dob 7/26/80) of 176 Berkshire Ave., Springfield, MA was charged with Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, Illegal Possession of Weapons in a Motor Vehicle and Alteration of Firearm Identification.  Ruiz was released after posting $5,000.00 bond and scheduled to appear at Danbury Superior Court on April 3, 2018.

Hector Martinez (dob 1/3/94) of 127 Newland St., Springfield, MA was charged with Illegal Possession of Weapons in a Motor Vehicle and Carrying a Dangerous Weapon. Martinez was released after posting $2,500.00 bond and scheduled to appear at Danbury Superior Court on April 3, 2018.
