Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Champs Boxing Club! Champs Boxing Club!

Three questions with A.J. Galante, owner of Champs Boxing Club.

Why did you start your business?

I started Champs Boxing Club in 2015 to give the city of Danbury a boxing club that could be an outlet for our youth, as well as a facility to develop both amateur and professional boxers. In 2011 I entered the professional boxing business as a manager. I managed various professional boxers and realized there was a need in the City of Danbury for a boxing gym for youth and adults interested in the sport, but more importantly a place where people could feel at home and get a great workout in. The gym also houses two nonprofit organizations, Youth Fighting Forward and the CBC Wolfpack amateur boxing team. We have clients from 5 to 72 years old.

What is your best selling product/service?

The gym environment sells itself. When you come into Champs Boxing Club you can tell that you're not in a regular gym. It is a very motivating, non-intimidating gym and everyone treats each other like family and supports each other. It is common for most weekends some of our amateur or professional boxers to be competing. Most of the gym attends to show support!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I try to utilize other small businesses as much as I can. The vast majority of our printing comes from our neighbor Diversified Printing Solutions. For apparel, we like to use Vision Designs in Brookfield. I typically purchase cleaning and medical supplies from local businesses. We also send all our boxers and athletes to local practices for physical therapy and anything medical-related including Hat City Physical Therapy and Integrated Medical, both of Danbury.
