Danbury Police Department responds to report of man with firearm, investigation reveals he had seen a bear in his yard

Danbury Police Department reports that at approximately 2:30PM today, they received a call for an agitated man with a firearm near Great Plain Road.

As a precaution, St. Gregory School was notified and placed on lockdown.

When officers arrived on the scene, they quickly established the homeowner was legally carrying a firearm on his property after spotting a bear in his yard. Others in the area notified police that a bear was seen wandering through the neighborhood. Lockdown was immediately lifted at the St. Gregory School. Dismissal procedures were not impacted.

It’s a busy time of year for bears! If you see one in your yard, you should follow these tips from Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP):

-Never feed a bear
-Do not approach a bear
-Remove birdfeeders from your yard
-Store garbage in a secure container
-Do not leave pet food outdoors
