My friend Sally will be THRILLED that I’m starting off by talking about The Monuments Men. This film is based on the true story about a seven man team put together by FDR during World War II, that was made up of museum directors/curators and art historians whose mission was to find and rescue priceless works of art from the Nazis.
On their quest to save these works of art, The Monuments Men find themselves pressed for time and if they don’t hurry up and find the stash of art, the Germans will destroy it all.
Verdict: With a cast that stars George Clooney (who also directed), Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Cate Blanchett, you would expect good reviews, but right now it’s not sitting pretty with critics (sorry, Sally). I’m still interested for history reasons and because of the cast. I’m just not sure when I’ll actually go see it.
A few other tidbits…
One of my favorite shows, Psych, just got cancelled and it was announced that its current season (the show’s 8th) will be the last.
Psych was one of the few cable shows to eclipse the 100 episode mark and its fans, including me, will miss the comedic cases of fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend and sidekick, Burton Guster (Dule Hill).
Psych was a smart comedy that was consistently well-written, the jokes were often but quick, and was filled with nerdist pop culture references that only a true fanboy could appreciate. It was clearly the best comedy to come around in a long time and was far and away funnier than anything on the lower channels.
All good things must come to an end. I’m just sorry it happened so suddenly. Apparently we haven’t seen the last of Shawn and Gus, according to USA President Chris McCumber. Let’s hope that’s true.
The final episode of Psych will air on March 26, 2014.
And speaking of things ending…
Thursday, February 6, 2014 was the final episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Personally, I’ll really miss Jay. He may not have been everyone’s favorite stand-up comic, he probably wasn’t the best out there in terms of funny/smart. What Leno brought to late night television was an everyman persona that many Americans can relate to.
Leno had a great run and hosted since 1992 and was the number one late night show over all the rest more often than not. After watching Jay’s final show and hearing his final words, I Tweeted this: Jay's final words were emotionally terrific. I felt that. One of the realest moments you'll see on TV. #JayLeno
Jay, congrats on 22 years hosting The Tonight Show and thanks for all the laughs.
