Darien Resident Increases Awareness for Alzheimers at Local Walk

The Fairfield County Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on October 4, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, CT. Registration for the annual event, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter, continues to shatter records and currently boasts 183 teams and 800 walkers who have raised $135,776 to date. To register for the Fairfield County event, please visit alz.org/ct. Event donations will be accepted through December 15, 2015 and can be made online. There are a number of Fairfield County residents who are critical to the current success. Their personal stories are highlighted below.

Darien resident Lisa Koorbusch is involved with the Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut because her mother currently suffers from the disease and has been in a very gradual decline for the past eight years while living at Maplewood at Darien. Lisa has volunteered with the organization for the past three years serving on the Celebrating Hope event committee as well as participating in the Walk. Lisa helped plan the inaugural Paint the Town Purple event currently being held in Darien (September 14 – 18).  The Grove Street Plaza fountain is wrapped in ribbon, purple ice cream is being served at Gofer Ice Cream, and education and awareness information is available at the Darien Senior Center.

Amy Silva-Magalhaes (Executive Director, Maplewood at Strawberry Hill) has volunteered as a member of the Walk event committee for the past two years. This year, she was instrumental in organizing the inaugural Paint the Town Purple event currently being held in Darien (September 14 – 18). The Grove Street Plaza fountain is wrapped in ribbon, purple ice cream is being served at Gofer Ice Cream, and education and awareness information is available at the Darien Senior Center. Amy was instrumental in planning the recent Darien Kick-Off event at the Andrew Stefanou Salon & Spa (Wednesday, Sept. 16).
