Children’s books focused on aquatic animals come to life Feb. 29-March 2 as The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk spreads out the fun of “Read Across America Day” into a three-day literary celebration with special activity stations and celebrity guest readers.
Launched in 1998, Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. Although it’s a year-round program, “Read Across America Day” traditionally is celebrated on March 2 – the birthday of the children’s author Dr. Seuss.
For the 2020 celebration, The Maritime Aquarium is offering three days of environmentally themed activities inspired by popular children’s books. For example, an activity focused on local turtles is rooted in Dr. Seuss’ “Yertle the Turtle,” while “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” serves as the basis for a matching game. Look for the activities at various times and locations around the Aquarium each day.
Plus, special invited guests will read stories on the Aquarium’s Sea Star Stage, including:
Sat., Feb 29 – Ryan Kristafer of Fox TV’s “Good Day, NY” at 10:30 a.m.
Sun., March 1 – Sarah Cody of WTNH TV-8 in New Haven at 12:30 p.m.; and Anna Zapp of STAR 99.9’s “The Anna & Raven Morning Show” at 2:30 p.m.
All guests, young and old, will be invited to write a conservation pledge on leaves that will be added to a Truffula Tree inspired by Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax.”
The “Read Across America” activities Feb. 29-March 2 will be free with Maritime Aquarium admission. Learn more at maritimeaquarium.org.
