The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the arts and culture across the 15 towns in our region of coastal Fairfield County and each Wednesday issues our free E-Buzz newsletter with a selection of the hundreds of events posted to our website by our members. Music lovers rejoice! You’ll have your choice of just about every genre of music this weekend plus a sprinkling of art, film, and dance.
Oscar-Nominated Short Films at Stamford’s Avon Theatre Film Center
Beginning on Friday and running through March 3rd at various times, don’t miss this perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world. Enjoy this year’s selection of short films, both Live Action and Animated, and get an edge on your Oscar pool. Fun for all!
Young Persons’ Concert with Gjorgj Kroqi at Pequot Library
On Saturday at 2:00 pm, it’s the launch of A Music for Youth Concert Lecture Series. This concert features Gjorgj Kroqi and will explore the birth and growth of Russian Nationalism that spawned an impressive generation of composers, musicians, dancers and visual artists. Gjorgj Kroqi is the orchestra director at Roger Ludlowe Middle School in Fairfield and the cello teacher at Taft High School in Watertown. Registration is required.
“Beethoven 2020 + 2” at New Canaan’s First Presbyterian Church
Greenwich Choral Society performs a concert that celebrates Beethoven's choral, orchestral and operatic works on Saturday at 4:00 pm. This program includes “Hallelujah” from The Mount of Olives, op. 85, excerpts from Fidelio, Mass in C Major and Missa Solemnis “Gloria” from the Mass in C Major, op.86 and more. With The Rye Country Day School Festival Chorus.
The Roaring Twenties at Stamford’s Palace Theatre
Stamford Symphony invites the public to hear Vince Giordano provide his vintage-style 1920’s music in a one-night performance on Saturday, 7:30 pm. Re-creating one of the most pivotal decades in American history from Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton to Duke Ellington, this music remains timeless. Also on the program, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue featuring Stamford Symphony’s Music Director, Michael Stern and pianist Mackenzie Melemed in this rarely heard original version written for the Paul Whiteman band.
Ballet Folklórico de México at Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University
One of the most popular and requested dance companies in the world returns to Fairfield on Saturday at 8:00 pm. Award-winning spotlights Mexican culture with a 60-member, one-of-a-kind Ballet company. They bring to life the vibrant dance, electrifying music, and elaborate costumes of Mexican folklore from pre-Columbian civilizations through the modern era.
Edward Thompson's "Step Into the Night” at Westport’s Unitarian Church
New York’s Choral Chameleon Ensemble presents the live premiere and record release of a twelve-movement choral soliloquy, written in response to the ever-changing state of the world. Saxophonist Jeff Walton and The Brad Whiteley Trio will appear with Choral Chameleon. Saturday at 8:00 pm.
“My Millionaire (The Currency of Love)” at The Westport Library
On Sunday at 11:00 am, an original musical and commentary based on Mark Twain’s short story, “The Million-Pound Bank Note,” explores the themes of money and power, and how people behave toward those who possess them. Book and lyrics by Nancy Becklean Tobin, Music by Barbara Backlar Reis, and Musical Direction by Chris Coogan.
“Eyes Full of Words” at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum
Calling all writers! An Ekphrastic Writing Workshop comes to Ridgefield on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Like a conversation between two artists, ekphrasis is the act of writing poetry or prose in response to a visual work. Join Ridgefield Poet Laureate and Aldrich Educator Barb Jennes as she guides the group in observing select works in the newest Aldrich exhibitions by artists Milano Chow and Duane Slick.
The Jacob Jolliff Band at The Ridgefield Library
Enjoy a bit of bluegrass led by one of the country's premier contemporary bluegrass mandolinists on Sunday at 2:00 pm. This rotating quartet of some of the most virtuosic and innovative young acoustic pickers in the country includes Alex Hargreaves on fiddle. Considered one of the best improvising violinists in the world, Hargreaves is the winner of the Grand Masters Fiddle Championship and a regular member of Chris [Thee-ley] Thile's Live From Here band.
The Stamford Symphony at First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan
Join the Stamford Symphony’s string quartet on Sunday at 3:00 pm to celebrate two examples of Beethoven’s string writing, his Trio, Op 18, and his Quartet Op 18 No. 3 on either side of a unique piece by African American, Florence Price, whose recently discovered works for violin demonstrate her gift for sumptuous harmonies, soaring lyricism, and references to spirituals and Juba dances.
Classic Jazz on Two Pianos at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Art
Sunday at 3:00 pm, the husband-and-wife duo, Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi share their fresh takes on classics from the stride piano, ragtime, and boogie woogie repertoires, as well as familiar favorites of the Swing Era, Classical Hollywood Cinema and the golden age of Broadway. Blending impeccable technique with humor and showmanship, Trick and Alderighi are considered the most engaging piano duo touring today.
“A Celebration of Black Composers” Sacred Heart University Orchestra
In honor of Black History Month on Sunday at 3:00 pm, The Sacred Heart University Orchestra presents an evening of classical music to benefit the St. John’s Family Center in Bridgeport with a program that includes works by Florence Price, Christopher Ducasse, Joseph Bologne de Saint-Georges and more.
