Town of Darien to distribute 400 trees to residents in honor of Arbor Day!

One million trees were planted on the first Arbor Day celebration, held in Nebraska in 1872. Since then, hundreds of millions of trees have been planted around the world in recognition of this special day, and we are pleased to announce our own Arbor Day event in Darien this year.

The Town of Darien has worked to secure 400 trees and plants from Eversource to distribute to Darien residents in recognition of Arbor Day.  These trees are in addition to plantings committed by Eversource after their recent clear cutting near the Metro North Railroad line. Every step we take towards rebuilding our tree population is a step in the right direction. Arbor Day is April 28th, and we will honor the day with a drive-thru tree and plant distribution to residents on Saturday, April 29th at the Noroton Heights Railroad Station parking lot located on the New Haven bound side of the tracks.

Pick-up will be one way starting at Hollow Tree Ridge Road and exiting by Post 53.

We hope that residents, particularly those that border property that was recently subject to clear-cutting along railroad tracks, will be able to attend and secure a tree.  Residents affected by the recent clear-cutting should come between 12:00 -2:00pm.  All other residents should come between come between 1:00 – 2:00pm.

Trees being supplied for you to plant at your home are:

  • 100 Pink Dogwood
  • 100 White Dogwood
  • 50 Witch Hazel
  • 50 Arrowood Viburnum
  • 50 Spice Bush
  • 50 Autumnalis Cherry

Please take a moment to research which type of vegetation is most appropriate for the conditions in your yard and come with a first, second, and third choice. Volunteers, including members of the Darien Scouts and Darien Green Team will be there to assist.

One plant per family will be distributed on a first come first served basis.
