Darien Family Provides Urgently Needed Matching Gift for Bridgeport Rescue Mission

Bridgeport Rescue Mission needs to raise a total of $40,000 immediately in order to replace their aged walk-in cooler which finally failed beyond repair last week after several attempts to fix it.

They are raising the final amount of funds needed for a new cooler here.

The project has just received a matching gift donation from a local family. Darien resident Leo Schlinkert noted, “Our family was happy to be able to make this matching gift to help Bridgeport Rescue Mission purchase a new walk-in cooler. They do terrific work in the community. We urge everyone to help them out.”

According to the organization, the $40,000 needed will pay for:

  • a new walk-in cooler as well as a
  • concrete foundation, and
  • associated installation costs

In addition, they’ve had to rent a refrigerated truck at an additional cost of $1,500 per week in order to continue to provide their programs, which include serving more than 550,000 meals per year to the hungry in our area, so additional donations are welcome.

The walk-in cooler enables the organization to have food on hand to cook and serve prepared meals to men in their New Life addiction recovery program, to low-income and working poor families who come to their dining room for 3 meals a day, and to also prepare meals for distribution from two of the organization’s Mobile Kitchens which serve individuals and families in need in Bridgeport and South Norwalk.

According to Executive Director Terry Wilcox, of Bridgeport Rescue Mission, “This cooler is essential. It also enables us to keep donated dairy, fruits and vegetables and other items fresh so that we can offer them during our daily Food Pantry where individuals and families in need can shop for fresh produce which we offer to the community in need free of charge.”
