Hunger Takes No Summer Break

Summer means a break from school, but for kids who rely on school meals, it can be difficult to get enough food to eat during the summer months. Our Lady of Grace Preschool and Kindergarten of Stamford joined forces with their community partners at Stamford EMS to collect perishable and non-perishable groceries for families in need.

Over a 3 week period, over one ton of food and drinks were collected by the school’s families and donated to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County in three separate donations. The third delivery arrived by ambulance yesterday, courtesy of Stamford EMS.

“A donation at this time of year means a lot,” said the Food Bank’s Executive Director, Kate Lombardo. “Many children who can no longer access free breakfast and lunches at school are at home during the summer and unable to get to feeding sites. This donation means we can keep them food secure.”

The Food Bank of Fairfield County estimates that it distributes food to 1,500 food insecure families throughout our region, including those in Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk and Wilton. More donations are needed at this time of year, as people often think to only donate around the year-end holidays.

“This was an important learning opportunity,” said Francine Manfredi, who volunteers at the school in addition to being a volunteer EMT for Stamford EMS. “Teaching kids the value of helping others is instrumental in instilling values such as kindness, compassion and empathy. It’s a win-win all around.”

The Food Bank of Fairfield County is one of lower Fairfield County’s primary hunger-relief organizations. To inquire about making a donation, call (203) 358-8898.
