Darien Blue Wave Swim Team Participates in Personal Challenge of Swimming Buoy-to-Buoy to Raise Funds for Swim Across America Fairfield County

The Darien Blue Wave Swim Team is making waves in the fight against cancer this Saturday, July 18, when they take on an open water buoy-to-buoy challenge for Swim Across America Fairfield County. The swim will take place at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18, at Weed Beach in Darien. Swim Across America co-founder Matt Vossler, who is also a Darien, Connecticut, resident, will also be at the event.

Typically, Swim Across America Fairfield County has a large open water swim each summer that attracts hundreds of participants and raises funds for its local beneficiary, the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), based in Stamford, Connecticut. But this year is different. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and the need to keep swimmers, volunteers, boaters and supporters safe, Swim Across America Fairfield County has pivoted to a virtual fundraising event — a Swim Across America Fairfield County Personal Challenge 2020. Individuals and teams who were planning on swimming together are now taking on their own “Personal Challenge” and #makingwaves to #fightcancer any way they can.

Fairfield County co-chairs Michele Graham and Nancy Carr have created their own “Personal Challenges” — The Graham Family of Old Greenwich are embarking on the Graham Fam Olympics where they are completing all 33 Olympic sports in an effort to raise funds for Swim Across America Fairfield County. Nancy Carr has formed team “Bonnie’s Buddies” in honor of her friend who passed away from pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Nancy and her team are walking 20 Fairfield County Towns this summer. Other individuals and teams are walking or running marathon miles, doing yoga, exercising, volunteering and more - the options are endless! Others who still want to swim like the Darien Blue Wave Swim Team who are swimming the buoy-to-buoy event can swim in a pool or the ocean. Any and all activities are welcome!

While these times are filled with uncertainty, one thing remains true: groundbreaking cancer research still needs funding to save lives. That’s where Swim Across America Fairfield County comes in to help #makewaves to #fightcancer by raising crucial funds to support its local Fairfield County beneficiary, the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT). Registration is through a $25 donation and can be made at swimacrossamerica.org/fc.
