Darien Library Announces the Return of the VITA Tax-Aide Program

The no-cost, full-service VITA Tax-Aide program is returning to Darien Library this year with a few changes to ensure the safety of all.

The service, with special attention to senior and low to moderate income households, includes an easy-to-use virtual filing system that allows users to work with IRS-certified tax preparers from home. Appointment registration for the program will begin on January 25 and end on April 15.

Community members can pre-register for the VITA program before it opens and find more information about the program here.

Due to COVID restrictions, there will be two options to access the service: an all-virtual method whereby clients will provide their information via a secure internet site and a limited, on-site scanning method at the Library beginning on Friday, January 29.

While the Library strongly encourages community members to have their returns prepared using the all-virtual filing method, limited in-person appointments will be available on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for those in need of assistance. Patrons will need to bring all of their tax-related documents with them to their appointments wherein IRS-certified volunteers will be entering patrons’ basic information and tax documents into the “Get Your Refund” system. Tax returns will be prepared remotely by trusted IRS-certified Virtual VITA volunteers and arrangements will be made to deliver the finished return to patrons at a later date. Appointments are required. Those interested in the scanning service can call 203-669-5236 to book their appointment in advance.
