YWCA Darien/Norwalk Launches 14-Day Challenge to Combat Racism

Challenge asks participants to tackle issues of race, power, privilege and leadership

Eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all is the Mission of the YWCA. The YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s 14-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge, beginning February 22, is a chance for participants to build more effective social justice habits. The challenge will tackle issues of race, power, privilege and leadership. Join thousands of others in this 14-day journey of self-discovery that is completed online.

Registered participants will receive a daily email challenge — such as reading an article, listening to a podcast or watching a video — and are then encouraged to reflect on that content and to relate the situation to their own lives. The goal is to build new understandings by challenging participants’ thoughts and learning about racism and equity in the Darien and Norwalk communities.

It is a personal commitment to devote between 5-30 minutes a day, for 14 days, to learn about the history and impact of racism, and the ways that bias, prejudice, privilege and oppression show up in people’s everyday lives. “As an organization of strong, diverse women committed to building better communities, the YWCA takes the issues that are gripping our nation and our community very seriously,” says communications director Jen Russey. The challenge is free of charge and is being brought to the community by the YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s Advocacy Team.

Emails will begin going out to registered participants on Monday, February 22nd and will continue through Sunday, March 7th. The YWCA Darien/Norwalk hopes to have hundreds of community members join this challenge. For registration and more information, visit https://ywcadn.org/challenge.
