Explore Lyndhurst Mansion with Darien Library on Sept. 28

Take a virtual adventure through a majestic estate on the banks of the Hudson River. Darien Library is pleased to present an evening with Howard Zar, Executive Director of Lyndhurst Mansion.  

Zar will provide an overview of Lyndhurst mansion, its 67-acre estate, and its 15 outbuildings. In addition to highlighting the main rooms of the mansion and important works from its ten-thousand-piece collection, Zar will discuss the recent restoration work to restore many of the major landscape features. Originally designed in the 1860s, the landscape features were influenced by the building of Central Park, including the recreation of footpaths, benches, rock formations, and landscape features based on period photography.

About Howard Zar

Howard Zar, Executive Director of Lyndhurst, has extensive and multi-faceted experience in art history, historic preservation, finance and marketing.

Howard Zar started his career as an art specialist and auctioneer at Sotheby’s. He worked full-time while simultaneously pursuing a master’s degree in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University, considered the pre-eminent art history program in the US. Zar then received an MBA from Yale and worked as investment banker at Merrill Lynch. He then became a partner in a global PR and marketing firm for 12 years, prior to joining the National Trust for Historic Preservation as the Executive Director of Lyndhurst.

Zar has personally been involved with numerous preservation organizations. He serves on the Board of the Museum at Eldridge Street, which conducted a 20-year restoration of the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue. He has served on the board of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. He has been the Board Chair of the Athens Cultural Center, a preservation and arts organization in the Hudson Valley, and is currently involved with the restoration of a house from 1706 under the auspices of the Greene County Historical Society.
