The Darien Pollinator Pathway and the Public Works Department of the Town of Darien are partnering in a Tree Planting Day on Saturday, October 2nd, from 9am – 12 noon.
The Pollinator Pathway has purchased a number of native trees with the proceeds of a grant it recently received from One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization focused on global reforestation. Public Works has selected various sites around the Town Hall area for planting and will be providing compost and mulch from the transfer station. Director of Public Works, Ed Gentile said: “We are excited to be partnering with the Pollinator Pathway in the first of what we expect to be many tree-planting projects in Town. Despite all the recent challenges, we are very keen to preserve and enhance our tree canopy given the role that trees play in helping us mitigate climate change and create a resilient environment."
The trees to be planted include Oaks, Striped Maple, Eastern Redbud, Birch and American Hazelnut, a mix that will help reduce the risk of loss through disease and will encourage an array of beneficial pollinators and insects to improve our biodiversity.
