Darien Community Association 2022 Academic Lecture Series Returns Virtually

DCA 2022 Academic Lecture Series “THE ARCTIC – FROM DEEP FREEZE TO HOT SPOT” Returns Virtually in January

Sponsored by the Darien Community Association, the series has been presented annually, without interruption, since 1956. While the format this year will be virtual, the series will continue to feature respected foreign policy experts at four Thursday morning lectures at 10:00am, beginning on January 6 and one evening lecture on February 3.

The 2021 series explored key international locations and offered updates on domestic conditions and international policies in light of both the pandemic and the U.S. presidential transition. This year’s virtual series will feature four morning lectures and one evening lecture focused on the climate, politics and geopolitical tensions in the Arctic.

The first lecture will be presented by Marisol Maddox from the Polar Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Her topic this year is The Arctic and Why it Matters. On January 13, Dr. Paul Andrew Mayewski from the Climate Change Institute, University of Maine, will be speaking on The Arctic, New England and the First Abrupt Climate Change Event in the Modern Era. Dr. Rebecca Pincus, of the U.S. Naval War College, will join the series on January 20 to discuss Great Powers and Geopolitics in the Arctic. The Thursday morning lectures will conclude on January 27 with Rachel Ellehuus, of the Center for Strategic & International Studies, speaking on NATO in the High North. The series will conclude onThursday night, February 3 at 7:30pm, with

Dr. Anne-Marie Brady, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, presenting on China’s Arctic Interests.
