Darien Reschedules Weed Beach Fest’s Bicentennial Birthday Bash and the Anniversary Ceremony

Amidst the uncertainties surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and after conferring with town officials, the town’s 2020 Bicentennial Committee voted unanimously recently to reschedule the Weed Beach Fest’s Bicentennial Birthday Bash and the Anniversary Ceremony to next year.

“We want to deliver a 200th birthday party that brings the whole community together and one that people will remember for a lifetime – and in order to do that, we’re rescheduling both June events until we can be sure that we’ll be keeping the community safe. It’s 2020, One More Time, in 2021,” said Al Miller, chairman of the committee.

In order to continue the Weed Beach Fest tradition; however, the town’s Parks and Recreation Department, under the direction of Jami Gore, the town’s Recreation Program Supervisor, is planning a virtual event on Saturday, June 6, so members of the community can sign on to live social media feeds in order to see bands, and participate in activities that are designed to be fun for the whole family.

“The Weed Beach Fest has become such a well-loved and anticipated event, we felt it was important to keep the tradition alive and also give the town an opportunity to come together — virtually — for a town-wide celebration,” said Jayme Stevenson, First Selectman.

The committee discussed rescheduling the events to the fall; however, members felt that the official Bicentennial events might conflict with other town events already scheduled for the fall. Also, the Weed Beach Fest is really a community beach party—so best to schedule in summertime. The Weed Beach Bicentennial Birthday Bash will now be held on June 5, 2021, and the Anniversary Day celebration will take place on June 12, 2021 at Slawson Cemetery.

For now, the 2020 Bicentennial Heritage Day is still being planned for Saturday, October 24 at the Darien Historical Society and the Mather Homestead and will feature the 5th Connecticut Regiment. Members of the committee said they would confirm the Heritage Day event date in early September.

“The Bicentennial’s official sponsors have been alerted to the changes and have been very understanding of the town’s efforts to reschedule the 200th Bicentennial celebrations,” said Laurie Orem, the committee’s sponsor liaison.
