Happy (Driving) Holidays! Connecticut Gas Prices Drop

CT, National Drivers Receive Early Holiday Present: Lower Gas Prices

As motorists head into the holiday season, they can expect pump prices nationally to drop because consumer demand drops and gasoline inventories rise.

In fact, national and Connecticut average prices each have dropped two cents today (Dec. 11) compared to this time last week.

Today Connecticut drivers are seeing a $2.67 average, down from last week’s $2.69. Prices, however, are 30 cents higher than this time last year.

A similar scenario is playing out nationally: average prices for a gallon of regular gas today are $2.46, down from last week’s $2.48. Prices today are 35 cents higher from this time last year.

This week the East Coast and Midwest are seeing the largest price drops although other parts of the country, the news isn’t so promising. There is much difference in pricing nationally because the global market is very volatile as the price of crude increased 67 cents to around $58 a barrel; and situations in Venezuela, a major worldwide oil producer; and in Nigeria are creating market jitters.

Venezuela is in the throes of a financial crisis that very well will impact oil production if the country defaults on its debt; Nigeria may see oil workers’ strike that could interrupt production and limit supplies globally.

AA’s weekly survey of prices in Connecticut’s four regional areas as follows:

  • Greater Bridgeport/Stamford  $2.74
  • New Haven/Meriden  $2.65
  • Greater Hartford  $2.64
  • New London/Norwich  $2.69
  • Windham/Tolland $2.61
