Community Message from Darien First Selectman Monica McNally

The unspeakable tragedy of teen suicides continues to occur around the country, as well as here in Darien. The marketing of drugs through social media is another very real and serious risk to teens. Easily distributed Fentanyl, sold online as other pills, can be deadly with just one pill. We must speak about these issues and the possible ways we can try to prevent them.  As a community.  As families.  As friends.

Teen years and high school have always been tricky for parents, teachers, and kids. Add in the fast pace of our lives, the many pressures young people face, especially in a town like Darien, and the advent of social media and all of its complications, and it is easy for anyone to mishandle this most important part of growing up.  Taking a wrong road when presented with so many alternatives can be fatal.

There is no single cause, nor a single solution.  We must start at the beginning.    How do we spot problems, and how do we deal with them? How do we support our children as they discover who they are and what they want to do in the future? Each child’s journey is unique and important.

A sorrowful ceremony at Noroton Presbyterian Church on Saturday brought hope to me. Scores of Darien High School students flooded the church to attend a vigil.  The students were distraught but clung to one another for support. It is this kind of support we all need, especially our students, to get through life’s low points.

Parents, talk to your kids.  Students, talk to your friends.  Our community offers support, and doubtless we will continue to expand it.  Please take advantage of programs offered to help understand and respond to warning signs, and adjust life, where necessary, to account for potential mental health issues.

With sadness, and hope,
Monica
