Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.

You're IT Stalzer Design LLC.

Three questions with Thomas Stalzer AIA, owner of Stalzer Design.

Why did you start your business?

I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and desire to work for myself. I enjoy working directly with clients on an intimate level from beginning to end on their architectural projects. After 20 years in the construction industry (working under a craftsman in residential construction and with some great high-end residential architects) and then experiencing the results of the 2008 recession I saw a need for more fiscally responsible design for homeowners to achieve their dream homes. Many first-time architectural clients were experiencing construction sticker shock. However, with my in-depth knowledge of construction techniques and assemblies, We are able to collaborate together with the homeowner on an intimate level in altering the design, construction details, materials and/or finishes to offer the homeowner the opportunity to achieve their dream home.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business. “ I wish I could…”

I wish I could…better market the value I bring to my clients. Today’s homeowner is more fiscally conscience. My experience of working on both sides of the table as a contractor and as an architect enables me to bring to every project and in-depth knowledge of the design approach as well as develop fiscally responsible construction techniques and assemblies. This allows my client to determine where they want to spend their money to achieve their dreams.

What is your best-selling product/service?

My “Low Cost Consultation” (LCC) is my best selling product. In today’s world, data is king. Clients require more data analysis which is essential in providing value. The LCC is a consultation based on research and facts which provides homeowners with an in-depth knowledge of their property. For example, it defines public entities that have jurisdiction on the property and what potential obstacles need to be overcome. The research will identify at a minimum the various documents that have to be produced to achieve a successful project. As a full-service firm, we offer many services. Defining the minimum services a client needs from an architect enables them to spend the savings on their home. Today’s homeowner performs a lot of research before they consider hiring an architect. Yet, they rarely research their own property prior to an addition/alteration. The intent of the LCC is to help my client make informed decisions on how best to move forward with the Design and Construction Phase of the project.
