Darien YMCA Boys Gymnastics Team Shines at States

For the third straight year, the Darien YMCA boys gymnastics team was extremely successful at the Connecticut USAG State Championship meet. The Level 4 and 6 squads placed second in the team championships and George Callahan and Joey Kattler won the All-Around (AA) titles for their level and age group. Nine gymnasts also qualified to compete at the Region 6 Championships in West Springfield, MA in April.

The second place Level 4 Division 1 team was paced by Ryan Timmeny, who placed second on parallel bars (p-bars), fourth on pommel horse and high bar and third on floor, vault and AA in the 7-8 age group.  Dashiell DeFelice flipped to second on floor and was fourth on rings and AA and third on high bar and p-bars where he tied Trip McNulty.  McNulty was also third on pommel horse and fourth on vault.  Benjamin Mann vaulted to second.  

In the 9-10 age group, Alex Trivedi swung to first on high bar with 10.6 and was fourth on pommel, second on rings and AA and tied for third with George McCallum on floor and p-bars and Liam Sullivan on vault. McCallum was champ on pommel horse with 10.20 and also placed third on rings and AA and second on high bar and vault.  Sullivan also took second on floor and third on high bar.  Trivedi, McCallum, Timmeny and DeFelice also qualified for the Regional Championships.

In the Level 6 D1 session, Joey Kattler had an outstanding meet, topping the podium on five events: floor, pommel, rings, vault and AA with a huge 56.30 in the 10-11 age group and placing third on high bar. Ryland Herzog placed second on floor, pommel and high bar where he tied Ryan Hough.  Hough was also third on p-bars.

George Callahan was equally successful in the 8-9 age group, taking first on floor, rings, vault, high bar and AA with 51.9 and placing second on pommel and p-bars. In the 12 and up group, Nate Smith placed fourth on both rings and p-bars.  All of the Level 6 gymnasts qualified for the Regional Championships.

At Level 5 D1, Derin Leon placed second on floor, fourth on p-bars and sixth on pommel and vault in the 9-10 age group.  In the 11 and up group, Jake Simon scored fifth on floor and high bar, sixth on vault and seventh on p-bars while Jackson Lawrence was fifth on the pommel.
