Darien YMCA Gymnasts Sweep Team Titles at States

The Darien gymnastics team achieved sweeping success at the 2019 YMCA Connecticut State Championship meet in Wilton, winning the team title for every Level they competed in. Thirteen gymnasts won individual All-Around(AA) titles for their age group and level.

The champion Level 7 team achieved a sweep-peat by also sweeping the AA titles for every age group for the second straight year.  Anna Altier set the pace, winning the vault and AA titles in the 11-12 age group with 9.5 and 37.15 and placing second on bars, beam and floor where she tied Julia Decsi. Decsi was the bars champ with 8.925 and was fourth on beam and second on vault and AA. Sophia Alarcon-Frias took third on beam and floor while Lauren Smith scored third on vault.

Kristie Alianiello captured four titles in the 13-14 age group, winning vault, bars, beam and AA with 37.10 and placing second on floor. Abby O’Brien flipped to first on floor with 9.35 and was fifth on bars, third on beam and AA and tied Megan Mitchell for fourth on vault. Mitchell was also third on floor. Anna Primmer took third on bars, fifth on vault, sixth on beam and fourth on floor and AA.  Melina Cardini earned fourth on beam and sixth on floor.

Emma Neaderland was the floor and AA champ in the 15s group with 9.4 and 35.375 and placed third on bars and second on beam.  Megan Cutler swung to second on bars and was third on vault and AA.  Lucy Collins vaulted to second and was third on beam.  

Lana Schmidt had a trio of firsts on vault, beam and AA with 34.75 and placed second on floor in the 16 and up group. Lily Fairleigh swung to third on bars and Kerry McDermott earned her meet high score on vault.

The first place Level 8 squad accumulated Darien’s highest team score of the meet with 113.70 for an eight point margin over Wilton in second. Leilani Nguyen paced the team, taking first on vault, bars and AA with a huge 37.575 in the 14-15 age group and placing third on beam and floor.  Tori Ware never wavered in winning beam with 9.625 and was third on bars and second on floor and AA.  

Saskia Chermayeff was champ on floor with 9.5, second on bars and fourth AA.  Olivia Perkins scored third on vault and fourth on beam and floor while Bella DeStefano was fourth on bars. Sofia Iuteri earned her meet high score on beam.

In the 12-13 group, Sarah Cross was the AA champ, placed second on bars and third on beam, floor and vault where she tied Anna Moss. Moss topped the podium on floor with 9.325 and was third on bars and second on beam and AA.  Nadia Borja had a pair of firsts on bars and beam with impressive scores of 9.55 and 9.825 and was second on vault.  Sofia DeStefano earned her meet high score on beam.  

In the 16 and up group, New Canaan senior Kaitlyn Moussignac closed out her YMCA gymnastics career by winning the vault and beam titles with 9.4 and 9.025 and was third AA.  

Sabina Molnar led the team champ Level 3 squad, winning vault, beam and AA with 37.375 in the 6-8 group and placing third on bars and floor.  Katie Jack captured the bars and floor titles with 9.5 and 9.3 and was fifth on vault and second on beam and AA.  Alina Khilko placed third on beam and fifth on bars, floor and AA while Elsa Keehlwetter earned her meet high score on vault.

Grace Creanza captured the beam and AA titles with 9.575 and 37.125 in the 9s group and placed second on floor, third on vault and fifth on bars. Chloe Sherman topped the podium on vault and was sixth on bars. Kate Whitticom scored fourth on beam, fifth AA, sixth on vault and seventh on bars and floor.  Heili Jalakas vaulted to second and was sixth on beam.  

In the 10s group, Nicole Recinos sailed to first on bars with 9.45 and was second on vault, fourth on beam, fifth on floor and third AA. Morgan Wise never wavered in winning beam with 9.525 and placed eighth on bars, sixth on floor, fourth AA and seventh on vault where Isabelle Noel earned her meet high score.

Reese Barrett nailed her beam routine for first with 9.575 in the 11s group and placed eleventh on bars, third on vault, fourth on floor and second AA.  Evelin Arreguin took fourth on beam, eighth AA, twelfth on floor and ninth on bars and vault where she tied with Elise DeGennaro. DeGennaro was also twelfth on beam.  Sloane Kosowsky scored sixth on vault.

The Level 4 team took first by a three-point margin.  In the 8-9 group, Jacquelyn Coppola topped the podium on vault, beam, floor and AA with 37.125 and placed third on bars. Courtney Timmeny took fourth on floor and second on all other events including vault where she tied with Violet Peroni. Peroni was also fifth on bars, second on floor and fourth AA.  

Eve Calio was the bars champ with 9.05 and placed fifth on floor and third on vault and AA. Taylor Davies had two pair, placing fifth on vault and AA and third on floor and beam where Anna Rogers was fourth.

Avery Hanson captured four titles on vault, beam, floor and AA with 37.175 and was third on vault in the 10s group. Molly Zengo had a full house with fourths on vault and bars and seconds on beam, floor and AA.  Lily Royce earned her meet high score on beam.  

In the 11s group, Tatum Jaroch was the vault champ with 9.2 and was eighth on bars, second on beam, fifth on floor and third AA.  Katie Cutler vaulted to second and was sixth on bars, seventh on beam, third on floor and fourth AA.  Shayna Moeller flipped to first on floor with 9.25 along with third on bars and sixth on beam and AA.

Rhea Rai took tenth on vault and ninth on bars, while Annabel Clas was fifth on beam and ninth on floor. Tanner Shanley placed tenth on bars and floor where Hannah Dudek and Kaia Woodman both earned their meet high scores.

Emma Bookless was champ on beam and AA with 9.425 and 35.925 in the 12s group and placed sixth on vault, fifth on bars and second on floor.  Jahnavi Orr scored seventh on beam.  Brook Wallace topped the podium for AA in the 13 and up group and shared the beam title with Olivea Rosenbaum.  Wallace was also second on vault and third on bars and floor. Rosenbaum was also fifth on floor, second AA and fourth on vault and bars.

The champion Level 5 squad was paced by Kayla Koproski who took first on bars and AA with 9.3 and 36.875, placed third on floor and second on beam and vault where she tied with Tess Hennigan. Hennigan was the floor champ with 9.025 and was third on beam and second AA.  Emily Rizzi topped the podium on vault and beam with 9.375 and 9.625 and was third on bars. Olivia Davis earned fourth on vault and second on beam while Ava Telgheder was fourth on floor.  

In the 11s group, Alexandra Kuras was champ on bars and beam with 8.8 and 9.7 as well as sixth on floor and second AA. Stella Nehro vaulted to fourth and was sixth on beam, third AA and second on bars and floor. Mina Leon tumbled to the top on floor with 9.325 and was sixth on bars, third on vault and fourth on beam and AA.  

Madeleine McGivney scored a pair of fifths on vault and beam. Elsa Del Bene was fifth on bars and sixth on floor while Katie Primmer was sixth on vault.

Reilly Costello was champ on bars and beam with 8.85 and 9.75 in the 12s group and second on vault and AA.  Isabella Koproski soared to 9.45 to win vault and was fifth on bars, second on beam, third on floor and fourth AA. Alexia Buchesky vaulted to fourth and was fifth on beam, floor and AA while Annelise Enters was fifth on vault. Mia Macdonald vaulted to fourth in the 13 and up group.

The Level 6 team took first by a four point margin over Glastonbury.  Alexa Bell set the standard, placing first on vault, beam, floor and AA with a huge 37.725 in the 12-13 age group along with second on bars.  Ava Licata swung to first on bars with 9.425 and was sixth on vault and second on beam, AA and floor where she tied with Ali Kolman.  Kolman was also third on vault and fourth on bars, beam and AA.

Tanner Generoso vaulted to fourth and was fifth on bars while Sophia Geffner placed second on vault and Penelope Arredondo flipped to fourth on floor.  

In the 10-11 group,  Ellie Davies was the floor champ with 9.25 and took second on bars, beam and AA.  Emily McKee soared to 9.3 for first on vault and was third on bars and AA while Sophie Root was third on beam.  Alex Decsi swung to second on bars in the 14s group and placed fourth on beam and fifth AA.
