Creativity Connects Darien: Meet Priscilla Feral, President Friends of Animals, Nature Lover

Creativity Connects Darien

What fuels a vibrant, connected, and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Darien?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Darien.

Creativity connects us.

Meet Priscilla Feral, president of Darien-based non-profit, international animal advocacy group Friends of Animals.

Is there an organization in Darien that makes you feel good?

I've dedicated most of my adult life to working for and overseeing Friends of Animals, a bold, independent organization that advocates for the rights of animals, free-living and domestic. Friends of Animals has evolved from its beginnings in 1957 as the most comprehensive affordable spay-neuter program in the country. The organization places critical habitat, wildlife protection, environmental activism and veganism at the core of animal advocacy. We also sponsor wildlife reintroduction efforts and sanctuaries in West Africa, and operate a primate sanctuary in San Antonio, Texas.

Where do you go for inspiration and creativity?

I love the Darien Land Trust properties. The Land Trust preserves and restores open space, nearly 220 acres in Darien. Also inspiring and filled with creativity are the new vegan eateries in town. Barvida is a new addition to the Post Road and they have a great Buddha Bowl. Also on the Post Road as Green and Tonic and Playa Bowls.  I also love the Gardener's Center in Darien for their organic products, and for shunning pesticides.

What do you love about your community?

We love to see red-tailed hawks nesting just outside our office window and in the open spaces all around town that provide wildlife habitat. A great wildlife viewing spot is the wooded area behind Trader Joe’s in Darien - perfect for photographing deer!

Our dogs come to work with us and we enjoy taking a break in the day to walk them to Tilley Pond. Tilley Pond covers over 8 acres of property in the center of Darien and is a lovely respite and great place to watch the ducks and geese. Pesticides are not used on the grounds there, which is productive!
