Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Dance on the DL!

Three questions Doreen Godfrey (D) and Linda Cicero (L), owners of Dance on the DL.

Why did you start our business?

Dance has played such an integral part of both our lives. There is an incredible amount that you learn on the dance floor, not only about dance but about yourself and life as a whole.  Dance is an expression. It is listening to the music, feeling it and moving through it, and through that movement, you find so much confidence in yourself.  We wanted to bring that into the Darien community and share that love with kids and adults alike.  When we saw a void for Hip Hop specifically we decided to make that our main focus and we've been running (or dancing) ever since.

Finish this sentence: I wish I could...

We wish we could... make the world dance.  We believe dance can change lives.  Seeing the impact that our program has on our students drives us to develop and discover new ways to inspire and motivate them. Our goal is to spread our message of positivity, of being the best 'you' that you can be, and of building each other up while never giving up.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We firmly believe that supporting other small businesses helps a community to grow and thrive.  For the past two years, we have been renting space from JoyRide in Darien. We have been teaching our kids classes and private lessons out of their front studio.  They have been amazing partners and we are incredibly grateful to them.

The UPS store in Goodwives Shopping Plaza handles the bulk of our printing. Chocolate Works, also in Goodwives Shopping Plaza, is a delectable source of sweet treats for our students. Arranged Floral Design, owned by Darien mom Courtney Pare, makes the most beautiful arrangments to add color and beauty to any room.

Kirby & Company provides a wonderful atmosphere for a quick coffee meeting and is our go-to spot for gifts (not to mention their amazing macaroons!). Kirby Girl has also provided us with some fabulous attire and accessories for our events. Elaine Kirby is a big supporter of fellow women entrepreneurs and has been a great friend and mentor to us.

Busy Little Bee, owned by Darien mom Lauren Haley, is an excellent resource for the community and we work with her to promote any classes or events we have.

We are also very grateful to be using Farrell Construction for the build-out of DL Studio coming in September to Darien.  It will be located in the Goodwives Shopping Plaza at 25 Old Kings Highway North right next to JoyRide!
