Darien Library Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Films, Talk

Darien Library will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of activities for all ages. The month kicks off on Monday, Sept. 16 with a five-week film series spotlighting foreign movies made in South America, including two Academy Award winning films from Argentina and Chile. Two popular American-made movies will focus on the Latino experience in the U.S. The films are “The Secret in Their Eyes” on Sept. 16, “Stand and Deliver” on Sept. 23, “Real Women Have Curves” on Sept. 30, “A Fantastic Woman” on Oct. 7, and “Nine Queens” on Oct. 14. All films start at 6:30 p.m.

For art history lovers, Larissa Bailiff, former associate educator at MoMA, will return for a talk about Edouard Manet and the spirit of Spain. Manet was not immune to the mania for all things Spanish–in fashion, art, and culture–that consumed Paris during the mid-19th century. This talk is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.

Darien Library’s signature event to wrap-up Hispanic Heritage Month will be a family concert performed by Grupo Warachando on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. for an hour of music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Venezuela. Grupo Warachando will perform a variety of popular genres such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Bolero, Cumbia, and Old School Cuban music. Grupo Warachando's band members have a deep rooted Latin flavor and play well-known songs with their own twist.

The Darien Library is located at 1441 Post Rd. in Darien, Conn. For more information, phone (203) 655-1234, or visit darienlibrary.org.
