Celtic Knot and Script Calligraphy and Ukrainian Egg Decorating Offered at DAC

The Darien Arts Center has expanded its visual arts offerings for adults and is now offering a new Calligraphy class that focuses on Celtic Script (Uncial) and an introduction to the Celtic Knot, and a Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop.

The Celtic Script (Uncial) and Knot class runs from March 9 through April 20th on Mondays from 7-9p.m. A variation of which was used in the famous Book of Kells created in 800AD, Uncial is a majuscule script (written entirely in capital letters). Uncial lettering was commonly used by Latin and Greek scribes from the 4th to the 8th century AD. Students may use it to write their favorite Irish proverb or even a bawdy limerick. During the latter half of the course, students will be introduced to Celtic Knot Design. Cost for the class is $295.

Pysanka”, Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop is on Thursday, March 26, from 6:30-9:30pm. A delicate craft thousands of years old, the “pysanka” is a Ukrainian egg decorated with traditional folk designs using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word ‘pysanka’ comes from the verb ‘pysaty,’ meaning “to write” because the intricate designs are not painted, but rather written on the egg shell with melted beeswax. Fee for the workshop is $95. All materials are provided.

Register for these classes and workshop that take place in the DAC Visual Arts Studio at darienarts.org, or for questions, call the DAC at (203) 655-8683. The Darien Arts Center is located at 2 Renshaw Road, behind Darien Town Hall. Lead sponsors of the DAC are Baywater Properties, DR Bank and Stamford Ford Lincoln.
