National Best Friend Day: Five Things We Forget to Thank Our BFFs For

Our best friends have become such integral parts of our lives to the point where we are under the impression that we are the same person, and sometimes take their companionship for granted. They’ve been there through everything: the good times and the bad, the big moments and the everyday occurrences, and they’ve still chosen to stick around and continue to watch it all unfold. Today, in celebration of National Best Friend Day, let’s take the time to reflect on the things we need to thank our favorite pals for.

  1. Telling us the difference between right and wrong - We have all been in those situations where we have found ourselves caught up in a web of people and things that were bad for us, and no matter how wrong we knew they were, we couldn’t seem to snap ourselves out of them. Our best friends have always been the ones to shake us back into reality and help us see our situations through a more real, rational lens. With their help, we’ve been able to rid ourselves of these bad habits and damaging people, and have come out the other end as better people for it, too.

  2. Being the one who always saves the day - Whether we need to borrow something from them or they remind us about an event we completely forgot we needed to attend, our best friends always have our backs. They always keep us right on track when things get to be a little too much, because the last thing they want to do is to see us fail. Our successes are their successes, and as our number one fans, nothing makes a best friend prouder than seeing the other half of his dynamic duo shine.

  3. Always knowing what to say - We have all had moments where we begin to doubt ourselves and finally come to the conclusion that we can’t do it. We convince ourselves that the best option is to surrender, but our best friends never let this happen. They remind us that we are completely capable when we feel like it the least. They remind us of our greatness, and all of the reasons why we can do it. Our best friends are the push behind every big decision we make or task we complete, giving us all of the confidence in the world with a simple “You can do this,” or “I believe in you.”

  4. Knowing just how to cheer us up - Whether we’re just having a bad day or going through a personal crisis, there’s no other person we’d rather want by our side than our best friend. They are always willing to lend a helping hand, be a shoulder to cry on, or just someone to listen to us rant. We often take for granted just how much they help us through, but at the end of the day, we know we wouldn’t have made it without them. Maybe it’s just  a tub of ice cream, or watching a silly movie on Netflix, or bringing us Chinese take out while we’re home sick, but our best friends always know the secret of how to turn our frowns upside down.

  5. Simply being there - Our best friends never have to think twice about being there for us, and we know that we would be there for them in a heartbeat, too. Though we may not agree with each other every hour of everyday, we know that we only want what’s best for each other, and try as much as possible to bring out the best in one another. Our relationships with our best friends are ones that can stand the test of time and distance, and though we may go our separate ways for a little while, coming back to each other will always feel like coming home.
