New Moms Embrace Stroller Strides to Get Fit & Have Fun

Fairfield HamletHub was doing a Fairfield Beach Area patrol recently and spotted a group of more than a dozen new moms in a group pushing strollers at a rapid pace down the sidewalk headed south on Reef Road. We pulled over and briefly spoke with the tail-end mom who let us know that the entourage is a subset of Stroller Strides. As she was hurrying to keep up with her crew and we didn't want to delay her, we decide to do our own homework on the group. We were intrigued by what we learned.

According to Stroller Strides' official Facebook page ( ), the group was founded in 2001 in San Marcos, California by Lisa Druxman, M.A., after the birth of her son. As the FB page states, "She knew there must be a way to blend her passion for fitness with motherhood. Apparently she was not alone because Stroller Strides has since become one of the fastest-growing fitness franchises in the country. The classes offer a workout while pushing a stroller. A stroller walk is combined with intervals of body toning using exercise tubing, the environment and the stroller. During this 60-minute class, mom achieves a total body workout and baby has fun! Stroller Strides is so much more than a fitness class, it is all about providing support and helping women succeed in their new role as moms."

Great idea, right? A whole lot of moms seem to think so, as Stroller Strides is offered in more than 1200 locations nationwide and is in 43 states, states the FB page. Further, the business has won awards including Entrepreneur 500 in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

If there's not a class near you, you can start one by visiting to find out more.
