Fairfield, CT - The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce that its new member Reef Shack Grill and Market has scheduled its Ribbon Cutting on December 11. The official ribbon cutting Ceremony will be officiated by First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick, at 4:00PM.
Dream it, do it…. Lesizza Style
The Lesizza family has created a new cornerstone in Fairfield – literally! The Reef Shack grill and market has opened on the corner of Reef and Oldfield Road, blending together wholesome and healthy ingredients and locally sourced goods and treats, with a delicious fare.
Owners Jason and Bridget Lesizza are excited about having created a space for all ages, to enjoy delicious food and great people. As a family-operated business, customers can expect to be greeted with a warm welcome in a casual atmosphere. The new venue will be reminiscent of local ‘shacks’ that line the coast of Cape Cod, serving local favorites including hearty fish and chips, the “Fairfield” cheesesteak, and house Italian ice sorbets, which will be served via takeout or delivery. The Lesizza’s are bounding out of quarantine with this new business as a sign that life goes on, safely of course.
Jason and Bridget’s story started when they met and started dating in Manhattan, where they both worked and lived. Eventually, they got married in 2003 and moved to Fairfield the following year, shortly after their first son, Luke (16) was born. “It’s always been the place I envisioned raising my children,” said Bridget, an area native. “I have so many fond memories, family, and friends in the area and wanted to have a similar experience for my children.” Their family grew to include two more children, Nora (13) and Gabriel (10) and their beloved dogs, Bear and Sanchez, and a family-friendly cat.
The common thread between Jason and Bridget’s families is the idea that hard work and integrity are the building blocks for turning great ideas into reality. Bridget Lesizza, nee Sargent, hails from a large Irish Fairfield family. Her father, who worked himself up from the mailroom to the CEO of a Manhattan-based insurance company, taught her from a young age to value hard work and perseverance. With his guiding hand, she learned that there is never a wrong time to do the right thing. Jason’s father, who was originally from Italy, came to America and opened a restaurant, J.R. Scotty’s, in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. “Scotty’s” remained a staple in the community for over 20 years. Jason came to respect the long hours his father spent at his business in Manhattan, often working long days to provide for his family. Jason learned all aspects of the restaurant business helping his dad. This instilled the idea that hard work is truly what fuels dreams. Jason opened his first business, an ergonomic business furniture company based in the city, with two partners in 2011. The small group of partners grew their revenues to $30 million and sold the company last year. For Jason, this created the opportunity to invest in his dream of providing great food to his community.
Their new business is aptly named for its blend of a market and eatery. In addition to the local favorites, it also features locally sourced staples and menu with a variety of options for healthy eating including salads and bowls.
Treating each day like a gift is something the Lesizza’s have championed during their time in Fairfield. In 2015, Bridget went into cardiac arrest. She was diagnosed with a condition that affects the rhythm of her heart. She considers herself not only a survivor, but a “thriver.” This experience served as a catalyst to reaching their goals.
Bridget has embraced the shift towards a health-conscious lifestyle, but as a graduate of Villanova College in Philadelphia, she still loves a delicious cheesesteak. This has inspired Jason to create the Fairfield Cheesesteak, which can be found on the menu. “Bring it Philly,” chides Bridget.
The opening of the Reef Shack is an invitation to bring all of Fairfield’s residents together as an extension of their family. “The integrity of what we offer is important to me. My family and friends live here, my kids and their friends are growing up here. This is our home,” Jason explained. Food is Jason’s love language, and as a self-professed grill master, he is known for his experimentation with new types of grills and techniques that will improve the flavor and presentation of his dishes. It’s the shaved meat that he feels makes the difference in his sandwiches. They have applied for a liquor license so they can also offer local beers and wines. The Italian ice sorbets and the loaded hand-cut fries are two must-haves on the menu that are sure to keep customers coming back. “I’ve been told the Mango sorbet is addictive,” said Jason. All the food will be made freshly on the premise and is sure to be enjoyed by all.
The family has been positively contributing to the Fairfield community through many channels. Bridget volunteers her time at the Burr Mansion's Christmas Tree Lighting Festivals and her children’s school, and Jason has worked with the Wounded Warriors Foundation. Now they are creating a space that’s truly an extension of their home, nourishing the community through great food and a welcoming atmosphere. They are continuing to inspire Fairfield by living every day to the fullest and with integrity.
