NORWALK, Conn. - Norwalk Mayor Harry J. Rilling and the Norwalk Military & Veterans Liaison Committee announced that veteran and Norwalk resident Daniel J. Caporale will carry the honor of Grand Marshal for the City’s 2022 Memorial Day Parade.
“It's a personal honor to have had a say in naming Dan Caporale as the Parade Marshal for this year's parade,” said Jeff DeWitt, Chairman of the Norwalk Military & Veterans Liaison Committee. DeWitt added, “He was a unanimous choice and it's long overdue. Dan has been a mentor to me in the veteran community, and I have learned a lot from him. He is an encyclopedia of knowledge about the history of veteran-related ceremonies. It will be nice to see him on the other side of the parade as an honoree instead of working the details or marching.”
Caporale served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1965. He is a Vietnam Veteran with service from 1962 until his discharge as Staff Sergeant in 1965. Caporale has called Norwalk home for the past 45 years; raising a family with his wife Bonnie, working with UPS, and being an active member of the Norwalk veteran community.
His accomplishments within the Norwalk veteran community include serving as Chairman of the Veterans Memorial Committee for 10 of the last 15 years, the current Commandant of Marine Corps League Mahackemo Detachment 37, and past Senior Vice Commander of Frank C. Godfrey American Legion Post 12.
“I am honored to represent the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives, veterans, and supporting our troops,” says Caporale.
The parade is scheduled for Monday, May 30, 2022 and will step off from Veteran's Park at 10a, proceed through East Norwalk on Van Zant Street, and then turn left on East Avenue to the Town Green.
