After-School Nature Explorers – FREE for Fairfield Residents
Thursdays, September 28; October 5, 12; November 2, 9
3:45 to 5 p.m.
When the school day is over, students in grades 3-5 will look forward to being outdoors for this after-school series at Connecticut Audubon’s Center at Fairfield. Meets Thursdays, 3:45 to 5 p.m., starting September 28. We’ll hike the Sanctuary trails looking for signs of animals like salamanders, worms and small mammals, and use ponding and insect nets to investigate wildlife up close and do hands-on experiments and natural science projects. Cost: Free for Fairfield residents. Per session fee for non-residents. Connecticut Audubon’s Center at Fairfield is located at 2325 Burr Street. Pre-registration required.

Little Nature Explorers
Tuesdays: October 3, 10, 17, 24; November 14, 21
10 – 10:45 a.m.
What do animals do in the fall? How do they prepare for the cooler temperatures? We’ll discover the answers to these questions and more in this lively, indoor/outdoor program for ages 2-3 accompanied by a participating adult. Activities include stories, crafts, games, experiments, live animal visitors and explorations. Pre-registration required. Series fee: CAS Members $120, non-members $150. Bird Walk at Smith Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary
Friday, October 13
8 to 10 a.m.
Connecticut Audubon’s Habitat Steward Stefan Martin leads a fall walk through the coastal meadows, shrubs, thickets, conifers and open woods of Connecticut Audubon’s Smith Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary in Westport. Expect to see a variety of sparrows, with other possible sightings of warblers (e.g. Yellow-rumped, American Redstart and Palm), and species such as the Blue-headed Vireo, Eastern Phoebe, Winter Wren, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets. Girl Scout Eco Quest

Attention Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts—nature badge programs are back this fall at Connecticut Audubon in Fairfield. On Saturday morning, October 14, Audubon’s teacher naturalists will lead explorations and hikes in the Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary to accomplish steps toward the following badges: Use Resources Wisely, Hiker, Bugs and Animal Habitats. Fall Hawk Watches – free program
Saturdays, October 14 and November 4
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Raptors have begun their fall migration and CT Audubon’s Conservation Manager Stefan Martin is leading hawk watches this fall in Fairfield’s Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturdays Oct. 14 and Nov. 4. It’s a great opportunity to witness and learn about birds of prey making their journey south. Best for ages 5 and over; must be able to walk approximately a half mile to the Deer Meadow location and back. Meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr Street, Fairfield. No fee, but registration is necessary at:  https://www.ctaudubon.org/2023/08/fall-hawk-watches/

Fall Bird Seed Sale

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Stock up on bird seed for the winter season at Connecticut Audubon’s annual fall seed sale at the Center at Fairfield, Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Save 20% on all varieties of the Nature Store’s premium bird seed and suet. Knowledgeable staff can advise on seed choices, feeder selection and answer all your backyard birding questions. All store sales support Connecticut Audubon conservation and environmental education programs. The Center at Fairfield’s Nature Store is located at 2325 Burr Street. Enchanted Forest
Friday, October 27
5 to 7:15 p.m.
Have a fun (but not scary) experience at Connecticut Audubon’s Enchanted Forest, Friday, October 27, 5 to 7:15 p.m. This beloved community event starts on the Larsen Sanctuary’s luminary trail to learn about nocturnal animals in their natural habitats. Live animals, crafts, snacks and hot chocolate, will round out this nature-themed, outdoors-only event. Dress for the weather; costumes encouraged! Guided walks leave every 15 minutes beginning at 5 p.m. Last walk leaves at 7:15 p.m. Members $10/person, Non-members $12/person. Pre-registration required. Due to popular demand, some walks may sell out. For best selection, register today!

Boy Scout Badge Day

Boy Scouts investigate nature up close at Connecticut Audubon’s Badge Day, Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr St. Webelo, Bear, Wolf and Tiger scouts will be led by teacher naturalists along the Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary trails to learn about local wildlife and habitats while satisfying badge requirements. The one-hour programs are $10 per scout; 90-minute programs are $12 per scout. Badges not included. School Day Off Fall Fun

What’s a better way to enjoy a day off from school than being outdoors exploring trails and looking for signs of wildlife. On Friday, Nov. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Connecticut Audubon’s Center at Fairfield offers School Day Off Fun when we’ll use insect nets to investigate pond life; roll logs to see what lives beneath; meet live animals; search for worms, insects, and salamanders; play games and more! For grades K through 5. FREE for Fairfield residents; $55 for non-resident CAS members; $65 for non-resident non-members. Pre-registration required.
