CROMWELL, Conn. — In one week, everyone over the age of 18 will need a REAL ID to board a domestic flight, access federal facilities, and enter certain secure locations. While at this time, BBB is NOT seeing any scam activity reported to us, we want to emphasize the correct process and possible red flags that people applying could run into online.
If you already have a REAL ID compliant form of identification, then there is no need to rush to meet the deadline; if you do not, you will need to upgrade. Real IDs have a star on the upper top portion of the card.
How to get your REAL ID
You can only obtain a REAL ID in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, as well as participating DMV AAA offices and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union locations.
BBB Tip: If you see a website offering REAL ID without an in-person visit to the DMV, it’s probably fake. Do not enter your information and report the website to BBB Scam Tracker.
You will need proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card, proof of Social Security Number, proof of residency, and proof of a legal name change.
BBB Tip: If you are asked to provide additional information, such as bank account or credit card numbers, that is a red flag of a scam.
Obtaining a REAL ID requires a fee. The one-time fee in Connecticut is $30.
