Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
Meet Spencer McCauley founder of Spencer's Therapy Practice LLC.
Why did you start your business?
I opened Spencer’s Therapy Practice LLC in September 2022 to meet the increasing need for well-trained child, adolescent and young adult therapists in Fairfield County. In graduate school, I learned that most therapists are trained to work with adults only, which leaves children and families without specialized care. Before starting Spencer’s Therapy Practice LLC, I spent several years at the Yale Child Study Center, Bellevue Hospital in NYC and at a local private practice. Following these experiences, I created a small business which could meet the needs of our clients by keeping our caseloads small. This allows us the time to collaborate with clients, schools, psychiatrists and parents, as well as the ability to keep up to date on the most recent therapies. Clients experience their therapist as responsive, flexible and ready to listen through client's highs and lows.
What is your best-selling product/service?
Although we serve all age groups, we are best known for working with children, teens and young adults. Clients who work with us are often looking for a “young therapist” who understands the current trends and provides a safe, non-judgmental space. We help parents and children build connections and understanding by using the family’s inherent strengths to their advantage. Many of our child and young adult clients report challenges with social anxiety, perfectionism, anxiety, OCD, autism, ADHD, and may be falling behind in school or have experienced a traumatic event. Sessions take place in person at our office located a minute’s drive from downtown Fairfield or via telehealth for clients who have busy schedules or prefer the ease of attending sessions from the comfort of their own home.
We are a fairly young company and are starting to reimagine aspects of our business in order to reach a wider audience and share our knowledge with more individuals in the community. We will always offer individual therapy, as individualized care is the basis of Spencer’s Therapy Practice. We plan to expand our services in three ways— through group therapy, creating online courses for clients and participating in speaking engagements for other therapists and community members. We have already started offering groups for families who are interested in learning specific coping skills and meeting other individuals who may be experiencing similar challenges. Our groups are a cost-effective way to try out therapy and get to know our therapists before starting individual therapy. We currently have an in person DBT coping skills and support group for parents which teaches practical skills to deal with overwhelm and effective communication when parenting and interacting with a partner or other caregiver.
